Schoolwide PBIS begins with the implementation of an evidence-based framework, that fits with all of the other reform efforts at the school level. Schoolwide PBIS continues as an interactive approach that focuses schools on delivering outcomes by developing and improving: 1) Systems, 2) Data, and 3) Practices. The diagram below illustrates how these key elements work together to build a sustainable system:

  • Outcomes: academic and behavior targets that are endorsed and emphasized by students, families, and educators. (What is important to each particular learning community?)
  • Systems: The way schools operate are their foundational systems. In MTSS/PBIS, these systems support accurate, durable implementation of practices and the effective use of data to achieve better outcomes. (What durable systems can be implemented that will sustain this over the long haul?) Systems support the adults.
  • Data: Schools generate multiple pieces of data about students every day. Within the MTSS/PBIS framework, schools use data to select, monitor and evaluate outcomes, practices, and systems across all three tiers. (What information do we need to make effective decisions?) Data supports continuous improvement.
  • Practices: Key to improving outcomes are the strategies to support students at every level. In MTSS/PBIS, these interventions and strategies are backed by research to target the outcomes schools want to see. (How will you reach the goals?) Practices support the students
