Truancy Support

1. Has the student missed 3-5 unexcused days? (Depends on district policy.)
    
2. Identify if the student is homeless. If so, make a referral to the District Homeless Liaison. If no, send a letter to the Parent/Guardian and notify the truancy person within your district.
    
3. If the student's attendance does not improve create an action plan. Identify barriers, counseling, other school support, outside agency referrals when appropriate.
    
4. If the student accumulates 6-8 unexcused days send another letter to the Parent/Guardian and schedule a meeting with them. (Depends on district policy.)
    
5. If the student accumulates 10 unexcused days and letters were mailed to the Parent/Guardian, a personal phone call was made, and a meeting was held, it's time to make a Truancy Referral to Berrien RESA.

1. Berrien RESA will mail a certified letter to the student's home.
    
2. The school will continue to monitor the student's attendance for improvement.
    
3. The school will inform the Truancy Officer of non-compliance with specific dates missed and the Truancy Officer will follow up.
    
4. If attendance continues to be an issue, the student's parent/guardian is called for a mandatory meeting at the school.
    
5. If all efforts fail, then Berrien RESA will explore legal action.
