Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics

A 3-part series based on Dr. Liljedahl’s book Building Thinking Classrooms.

Session 1: Establishing Environment

This session focuses on developing thinking tasks, creating collaborative groups, and classroom set-up to support highly engaging learning.

Session 2: Engagement & Autonomy

Participants collaborate and reflect on research for supporting student questions, task presentations, and fostering student autonomy in a thinking classroom. The afternoon session concentrates on engagement modes and consolidating lessons for students. Teachers will practice tasks and reflect on their progress towards a thinking classroom.

Session 3: Assessment

This session examines what research says about grades in a thinking classroom and how rubrics and various forms of formative assessment can be used with this model to support student learning.
