Communication is the sharing of information, desires, & ideas. We communicate by speaking, writing, showing facial expressions, through signs, and with pictures. Language is a form of communication and speech a form of language.

At BLC, language skills are developed to build vocabulary and form sentences. Students work on fluency, following directions, and articulation. Students become more intelligible as they learn to imitate sounds and eventually correctly use those sounds to form words. Some students who are non-verbal can also communicate using alternative communication devices. These devices range from simple picture boards to high tech communication boards.

The goal of speech and language therapy is to have our students be able to communicate at a level equal to their cognitive level. When that level is achieved, they graduate from speech services.

Some activities speech and language therapy staff work with students on are:

  • practicing speech sounds
  • following directions
  • using special devices to communicate
