D5
is a Severely Multiply Impaired classroom with students ages six to
eleven. This classroom consist of one teacher and two
para-professionals. Key areas focused on in the class include
positioning, standing, and other mobility skills. Communication skills
are worked on through the usage of augmentative communication devices,
sign language, and switches. Adaptive switches are used to encourage
independence in activities such as playing, turning things on, and
making choices of activities. D5 also works on sensory
integration activities, early basic academic skills such as calendar,
numbers, alphabet, weather, colors, shapes, animals, safety signs and
body parts. Self feeding skills are also focused on in the classroom.
Some of the students favorite special activities include swimming,
music, art, cooking, gym, library, computer lab, multi-sensory room and
story time.
