Teacher-Emily Brumbaugh
Emily Brumbaugh

Welcome to Physical Education & Health!  Students at Lighthouse Education Center are given the tools to be physically active and healthy for a lifetime. Our Physical Education and Health teacher, Mrs. Emily Brumbaugh, M.Ed., CAPE, is a nationally certified Adapted Physical Education teacher, as well as highly qualified in Physical Education, Health, and teaching students with Emotional Impairments. Mrs. Brumbaugh is also serving as the Vice President of Adapted Physical Education (2018-2019), for our state organization, SHAPE MI. She strives to be the best version of herself and a healthy role model for her students, every day!

Physical education content meets national and state standards and integrates the EPEC model curriculum. The program consists of a variety of team and individual sports, as well as fitness, cooperative learning, and outdoor adventure activities. Examples of the units include pickleball, bowling, fishing, volleyball, fitness testing MILE, and ultimate frisbee. We are also fortunate to be including heart rate monitor technology! The IHT heart rate monitors track student heart rates during daily physical education class and serve to help them achieve their daily goal of minutes “in the zone.”

Health education content meets national and state standards and integrates the Michigan Model curriculum. This curriculum begins with seven foundational health skills and then demonstrates how those skills are used throughout the rest of the units. Examples of the units include Nutrition, Communicable Diseases, and Safety.

The physical education and health classes also integrate the school-wide PBIS program, P.R.I.D.E., and Zones of Regulation. Additionally, the program works with community partners, such as the State of Michigan DNR, for the fishing and Salmon In The Classroom unit. We’re proud to share that the Physical Education department has won multiple grants over the years, most recently receiving bowling equipment through the In-School Bowling program and Math Skillastics through Berrien Community Foundation. Lighthouse was also recognized in 2018, as a Silver Award Healthy School, by the Building Healthy Communities grant program and State of Michigan! Building Healthy Communities has supported our physical education program over the years, through a plethora of equipment for various units, including a Sparky lap timing system!

We are grateful to share these opportunities and accomplishments with our students! In the words of Thomas Jefferson, “A strong body keeps the mind strong.”  Be stronger than yesterday!
