Berrien RESA’s Rebecca Crocker named to the Saginaw Valley State University Gerstacker Fellowship Program

Berrien RESA’s Rebecca Crocker named to the Saginaw Valley State University Gerstacker Fellowship Program

Saginaw Valley State University introduced 10 K-12 education leaders from across Michigan as the newest members of the Gerstacker Fellowship Program during the program’s annual symposium at SVSU in November. Rebecca Crocker, Berrien RESA’s Director of Instructional Services, has been named to this cohort.

The Gerstacker Fellowship prepares school administrators, instructional specialists, and district-level leaders for the complex challenges of educational leadership. Throughout the yearlong program, fellows meet regularly for intensive workshops and seminars focused on leadership development, organizational culture, communication, educational policy, and global perspectives on schooling.

"Participating in the Gerstacker Fellowship represents more than a personal milestone; it is a strategic investment in the future of Berrien County," said Crocker. "My journey through this program is fueled by a commitment to translate global insights into local progress, ensuring that our community remains a vanguard of educational and civic excellence."

As part of the fellowship, the cohort will complete an international study experience in Japan and South Korea in spring 2026, where they will visit schools, universities, and cultural institutions to compare global approaches to teaching, learning, and school governance. The international component, a hallmark of the program since its creation, provides participants with firsthand insight into successful practices used in education systems around the world.

“Nearly 200 educational leaders have now completed the Gerstacker Fellowship, and each has made an impact in their schools and communities,” said Matt Schmidt, co-director of the program. “Our goal is to continue developing leaders who inspire collaboration, innovation, and student success across Michigan.”

Crocker explained that her commitment to our county’s leadership extends beyond immediate support and into the vital work of mentoring the next generation.

“I hope to bring a refined approach to leadership development, focused on identifying emerging talent within our community and providing leaders with the intentional mentorship necessary to navigate complex challenges,” said Crocker. “By cultivating a robust pipeline of prepared, confident leaders, we can ensure that Berrien County’s growth is a sustained legacy. My goal is to use the insights gained from this fellowship to serve as a bridge, connecting our current successes with the future potential of those who will lead us tomorrow.”
