Behavior Interventions
The goal for most educators, parents, and other professionals is for ALL students to be successful in school and in life. To reach that goal, many have adopted a three-tiered model of behavioral support. Interventions are developed at Universal (school-wide), Targeted (small groups or individual students), and Intensive (wraparound) levels to teach ALL students what they must do to be successful. This page identifies and provides links to resources for each level of behavioral support.

Behavior Interventions: Universal
"Among the most important advances in student discipline procedures over the past decade is recognition of the need for school-wide behavior support systems. Historically, discipline in schools has been driven by attention to specific children with problem behaviors. This continues to be an essential component of school policy. However, a major advance has occurred through recent efforts to define proactive, school-wide systems of support. The goals of school-wide systems are to define, teach and support appropriate behaviors in a way that establishes a culture of competence within schools. When a competent culture is established the students are more likely to support appropriate behavior and discourage inappropriate behavior by their peers. In competent cultures the teachers find themselves working with the majority of the students (70% to 80%), rather than continually trying to control the entire student body" (

Safe and Civil School Series
The Safe and Civil School Series is a collection of practical materials designed to help schools improve the safety and civility of all their school settings. In so doing, a foundation is laid to enhance student engagement and learning. The goal of all the materials in the Series is to empower school personnel with techniques to help all students behave responsibly and respectfully. The materials are full of specific "how-to" information.

Intervention Central
Intervention Central offers free tools and resources to help school staff and parents promote positive classroom behaviors and foster effective learning for all children and youth. The site was created by Jim Wright, a school psychologist from Syracuse , NY . Visit to check out newly posted academic and behavioral intervention strategies, download publications on effective teaching practices, and use tools that streamline classroom assessment and intervention.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) Web Site
The Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) has been established by the Office of Special Education Programs, US Department of Education to give schools capacity-building information and technical assistance for identifying, adapting, and sustaining effective school-wide disciplinary practices. In 1999, an Education Week article, " An Ounce of Prevention," was written with regard to the work of the Technical Assistance Center .
Safe and Responsive Schools
The Safe and Responsive Schools Project is a model demonstration and technical assistance project, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, dedicated to enabling schools and school districts to develop a broader perspective on school safety and violence prevention, stressing comprehensive planning, prevention, and parent/community involvement.
Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP)
The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and partners have two noted publication relating to school-wide intervention. The first, Early Warning, Timely Response: A Guide to Safe Schools, offers research-based practices designed to assist school communities identify these warning signs early and develop prevention, intervention and crisis response plans. The second, Safeguarding Our Children: An Action Guide, offers guidelines for school safety, emphasizes early intervention and prevention, and the importance of teamwork among educators, mental health professionals, parents, and students.
Regional Intervention Program (RIP)
The Regional Intervention Program has been serving families with young children since 1969. RIP is an internationally recognized parent implemented program in which parents learn to work directly with their own children. Experienced RIP parents provide training and support to newly enrolled families. The program is available to families in which there are concerns regarding a young child's behavior, and is coordinated by a professional resource staff person. Parents should feel free to contact the program to discuss their concerns. In 2000, an Education Week article, " Study Shows Early Intervention Can Avert Spec. Ed. Needs," was published regarding RIP's research.
Creating Positive Classroom Environments
This site provides suggestions and strategies for maintaining positive classroom environments that facilitate high rates of student success. Within each module, scripted video scenarios demonstrate the difference between correct and incorrect application in actual classroom settings.
School Violence Prevention and Intervention
The School Violence Prevention and Intervention issue area on the Center for Effective Collaboration and Practice's Web site provides links to several resources relating to violence prevention and intervention.

School-Wide Information System (SWIS)™
The School-Wide Information System™ is a web-based software system for collecting and summarizing office discipline referrals in schools. The system was developed by University of Oregon faculty in collaboration with elementary, middle (junior high) and high school personnel. The purpose of SWIS™ is to provide schools with accurate, efficient, practical information for decision-making about school-wide discipline.

"The First Days of School" is a classroom universal resource that many teachers find helpful. The book walks a teacher, either novice or veteran, through the most effective ways to begin a school year and continue to become an effective teacher.
The Council for Exceptional Children: Research Connections
Behavioral management techniques, a longtime focus of special education research, are being integrated into school-wide systems. This issue describes this promising research that is helping all students manage their own behavior in school settings (Vol. 1, No. 1, 1997).
