Program Information

Berrien Regional Education Service Agency is committed to supporting the development of Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Viewing. These areas of Language Arts are critical for student achievement in all content areas, and are a focus for our work from birth through grade twelve. At Berrien RESA, the Early Childhood Department works with parents and children from birth to school-age, setting the ground work for successful literacy development. The Language Arts Consultant continues this work by providing services to all staff and administrators in local schools. Our goal is to create life-long learners that employ the language arts for a variety of purposes, including enjoyment.

Services Provided

  • Professional Development classes, including Reading Apprenticeship for Middle and High School, 6 + 1 Traits of Writing, Foundations, Teacher Reading Academies for K-1 and 2-3, MLPP for K-2, and MLPP for 3-5 are offered. Shorter workshops on various topics, such as MEAP preparation, are available both at the RESA and in local districts.
  • Network meetings are offered once or twice each year for K-5 and 6-12. These meetings serve to update teachers on state-level information, new strategies and instructional ideas, programs, and new children’s’ literature.
  • A Countywide, Collaborative Curriculum for Language Arts was written in 2004 and aligned to the GLCEs in grades K – 8. This document is available through the Language Arts Consultant. Revisions/rewrites are scheduled for the 2008-09 school year.
  • The Arts and Science EXPO is an annual student event. All Berrien County students in grades 4-12 are invited to enter their original literary work. The Communication Arts category includes narratives, poetry, original books, inquiry projects, and music compositions.
  • An annual Spelling Bee is hosted at Lake Michigan College in February. The local winner will move on to the national competition.
