Program Information

To help schools promote health and provide a safe, secure and positive learning environment for their students, Berrien RESA coordinates grants and funding from several sources:

  • Michigan Department of Community Health Child & Adolescent Programs grant
  • Michigan Primary Care Association grant
  • Safe & Drug Free Schools and Communities grant
  • Shaping Positive Lifestyles & Attitudes through School Health (SPLASH) funding

These funds provide for the following programs:

All Tri Youth Triathlon

This three sport event, originated in 2009, is held annually in June at the Bridgman Aquatic Center. Eight-twelve year-olds from Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties swim 150 yards, bike 1 1/2 miles and run 1/2 mile. All finishers receive a medal and T-shirt. Parents and participants are encouraged to attend one of the training clinics held in May. Triathlon Handbooks that include training information, tips for success and entry forms are available February 15.

Coordinated School Health & Safety Programs

Incorporating the eight components of school health can impact student achievement in positive ways. Improve the school environment by coordinating school health programs, family involvement, health services, counseling, nutrition services, school environment and health promotion for staff.

Michigan Model for Health

The state's nationally acclaimed K-12 health curriculum is aligned to Michigan Content Standards for Health Education. Michigan Model increases students' positive behaviors and involves families and communities in extending health learning beyond the classroom. Students acquire skills to improve their lifelong health, reducing health care costs. Grade level trainings are held each year as the program is revised and updated.
