The staff in the secondary education program provide a caring and supportive environment for students with a varied set of skills and abilities.  All three teachers in the secondary education program are highly qualified in their subject areas and in the area of Emotional Impairment.  Each of the three classrooms includes a paraprofessional.  All staff are trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and regularly utilize various strategies to de-escalate difficult behaviors and maximize learning opportunities.  Most importantly, all staff work to develop relationships with each student in order to help build confidence and a desire to make positive life long changes.

The diverse student body at LEC all have an opportunity to earn a Diploma or a Certificate of Completion.  Instruction is provided in the core content areas of Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and English.  Other courses offered at LEC include Community Based Instruction, Work Experiences with local businesses, Social Skills, and World Languages.  We strive to consistently deliver courses that meet Michigan Merit Curriculum and local district requirements.  In addition to this, online instruction is offered through Edgenuity (E2020) for initial or credit recovery purposes.

Instruction is delivered in small groups (2 to 7 students) and taught with an emphasis on meeting the student at their individual ability level. The secondary education program emphasizes communicating with others, following instructions, completing work and cooperative learning, and a variety of other academic skills. Students that meet expectations of the program are eligible to transition back to their local school district, a Career Technical Education (CTE) Program in the county, or a work setting in the community. Our goal for all of the students in the secondary program is to help transform them into productive, independently minded adults who can achieve in their post-secondary lives.
